WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING! (07/2010)
“This IS, and will continue to be, the best record of 2010” – Huffington Post
“Reform School Girl is also the first killer party record of 2010, homage to the old-school style of sticking a disc in the player and letting it roll all night long.” – Austin Chronicle
“If you like your rock and roll raw, your blues lowdown, this is the disc for you.” – Vintage Guitar
“Curran rocks, not only in attitude, spirit and raucous guitar playing, but also with a predilection for vintage equipment and a fuzzed-out sound. This is the '50s that you haven't heard until now.” - BluesWax
“The whole CD is nothing short of glorious…we don’t offer record ratings, but six out of five for this one!” – Blue Suede News
“Although recorded in the 21st century, the Super 8 of this entrancing album could have been unearthed beneath Chuck Berry’s old outhouse, such is the authenticity of the rock ‘n’ roll proceedings.” – Guitarist Magazine
“A fiery, campy, and insanely rockin' album, Reform School Girl sounds like something along the lines of Little Richard backed by the Misfits with Phil Spector recording the proceedings in his garage.” – All Music Guide
“But an even better comparison is this: Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino. Curran’s fondness of this music recalls the director’s own recollection of the grindhouse cinema of his youth, in that he savors not only the form, but the outrageous, B-level camp that lurked just below the surface. He knows what he’s doing has a certain trashy genius to it, and that’s what makes it brilliant. Reform School Girl is pulp rock and roll for a new generation.”– The Hurst Review

NICK CURRAN - PRESS RELEASE FROM SHORE FIRE MEDIA (02.04.10)
THIS 'REFORM SCHOOL GIRL' WAS LOCKED UP WITH VINTAGE GEAR
When Austin garage rocker and "powerhouse performer" (All Music Guide) Nick Curran went into the Fort Horton studio in Wyldwood, Texas to produce and record what would become 'Reform School Girl' (out from Eclecto Groove February 16th), he says he wanted "a recording that sounds like it's gonna explode out of your stereo at all times," and one listen will tell you that he succeeded. 'Reform School Girl' is a raucous collection that brings to mind both the sounds of Specialty Records - early home to one of Curran's heroes, Little Richard - and the Ramones.

"I dig a kind of lo-fi recording sound, but one that doesn't sound like sh*t," he continues. "Sometimes people think that to get something to sound cool and old, it has to sound bad. The way we do it, it's still sonically great." Those who hear 'Reform School Girl' will agree.

Much of that sound results from the analog equipment and vintage instruments Curran and co-producer Billy Horton (bassist in Curran's band the Lowlifes) used in the studio. Curran played a variety of guitars, including a classic Gretsch, a Squier '51, and an '80s Kramer, best known as an Eddie Van Halen favorite. Of the latter, Curran marvels, "It's one of the guitars that sounds the best in the studio, but you would totally not think it would." Curran and Horton also used tube amplifiers including a Tweed Fender Champ, first introduced in 1955; a Tweed Fender Deluxe from the '50s, known for its saturated tone; and a Blackheart 5 watt combo.

"Some songs are very simply produced," Curran says, "but on the title track we actually ran outta tracks on that and had to add a bunch more on. We were really trying to get a Phil Spector-ish sound on that, so we made sure we put too much of everything on that one!

NICK CURRAN - PRESS RELEASE FROM SHORE FIRE MEDIA (12.22.09)
Nick Curran's Long-Awaited Return, 'Reform School Girl' (Eclecto Groove / Feb. 16, 2010), is A Blast of High-Energy Vintage Rhythm & Blues

"One of the most authentic and exciting roots musicians of his generation" (All Music Guide) Is Back, Following Awards, Critical Huzzahs & Turn On HBO's "True Blood"

Listen to songs from the album here: http://www.myspace.com/curranrock

On 'Reform School Girl' (Eclecto Groove, Feb. 16, 2010), Nick Curran's fifth solo release and first new album in five years, the shouter, songwriter and monster guitarist is an unstoppable, high-energy one-man 50's R&B revival. Curran wrote or cowrote 12 of the album's 14 foot-stomping tracks.

Called "just a total ass-kicker" by no less an authority than Jimmie Vaughan of The Fabulous Thunderbirds (with whom he played for three years), the Austin-based Curran and his new rock'n'roll roots band, The Lowlifes, pull out all the stops on the new album. Curran recorded 'Reform School Girl' on vintage instruments and analog equipment, all the better to recreate the raw, explosive sound of early R&B and rock'n'roll 45's that he loves.

Tracks such as "Tough Love" and "Lusty Li'l Lucy" show the influence of Little Richard and Chuck Berry, while the title track with its refrain, "She stole my heart and then she blew this town" pays homage to girl groups like the Shangri-Las and the Ronettes. "Baby You Crazy" recalls the Sonics at their loudest.

Nick Curran's previous release, 'Dr. Velvet,' garnered the 2004 W.C. Handy Award (now known as the Blues Music Award) for "Best New Artist Debut." In 2008, Curran performed four songs on the mega-hit HBO series "True Blood." All Music Guide called him "one of the most authentic and exciting roots musicians of his generation."

NICK CURRAN SIGNS WITH ECLECTO GROOVE! (10.08.09)
Nick Curran joins us by way of Austin, Texas, and lays down a strikingly savage blend of ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll, rhythm & blues, rockabilly and of course, slashing Texas blues. After four stunning solo releases Nick disbanded the Nitelifes and took flight with The Fabulous Thunderbirds appearing on the band’s 2005 release “Painted On,” alongside a stellar lineup that also included Kirk Fletcher on guitar, Gene Taylor on piano, Ronnie James Weber on bass and Jimi Bott on drums. But alas, all good things must come to an end, and Nick soon turned his attention in a surprisingly new direction. His band, Deguello, soon found Nick pursuing his passion and affinity for punk rock music while also allowing a whole new audience to discover his boundless energy and ferocious raw talent. But for fans of his earlier blues influenced recordings, it would seem that all was now lost. Fast forward to 2009 and where is Nick now? Well…he’s back!! And sounding better than ever!!! His new band, The Lowlifes, recall his earlier rhythm & blues inspired work for the Texas Jamboree label and Nick is promising fans that the best is yet to come. Look out for Nick Curran & the Lowlifes brand new release in early 2010 on Eclecto Groove Records.
